Double your donation with The Big Give

As the festive season approaches, so does one of the most powerful fundraising opportunities:

The Big Give Christmas Challenge.

Running from midday on 2nd December to midday on 9th December 2025, this seven-day online match funding campaign gives donors the chance to double their donations to participating charities - creating twice the impact with every pound.

I first came across The Big Give while working in-house for a local cancer charity and since then, I’ve supported multiple organisations in running successful campaigns helping them to raise tens of thousands of pounds over the past few years.

The Big Give is more than just a way to raise money, it’s a chance to unlock access to new donors - especially for charities that find it challenging to attract major gifts. It also helps boost visibility, build community support and strengthen long-term donor relationships.

What is The Big Give Christmas Challenge?

The Big Give is one of the largest match funding campaigns, which supports charities across sectors - from health and education to the arts and environmental causes. The Christmas Challenge uses a Pledge Model, where charities secure match funding from their own supporters and Big Give’s Champion funders. During the campaign week, public donations made via the Big Give platform are matched, doubling the value of every gift.

In 2024, the campaign raised £44.7 million for over 1,200 charities, with 74% reaching their fundraising targets. This year, the goal is to go even further.

Sheffield charities taking part in 2025

Sheffield is proudly represented in this year’s campaign by several impactful organisations:

  • Sheffield Young Carers – Supporting young people who care for family members with disabilities, illness or addiction.

  • Sheffield Wildlife Trust – Connecting children with nature.

  • Music in the Round – Keeping live music alive in primary schools.

  • Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) – Providing vital support to older people in the community.

  • The Snowdrop Project – Empowering survivors of modern slavery.

Each of these charities is using The Big Give to amplify their mission and reach new supporters. So, whether you're passionate about youth, nature, music or social justice, there's a cause to connect with.

Tips for running a successful Big Give Campaign

If you're a charity marketer or fundraiser preparing for the Christmas Challenge, here are some tried-and-tested strategies to maximise your impact:

1. Start early with pledges

Let your supporters know about the campaign well in advance so they’re primed to give when the match funding goes live.

2. Craft a compelling story

Donors give to people, not just causes. Use real stories, testimonials and visuals to show the tangible impact of donations.

3. Use multi-channel marketing

Promote your campaign across email, social media, your website and local press to build momentum and keep your audience engaged. Countdown posts, live updates, and donor shout-outs are great ways to create a sense of urgency and celebration. And, if budget allows, don’t overlook direct mail - a well-timed piece landing on someone’s doormat can cut through the digital noise and serve as a powerful prompt to donate.

4. Engage your existing supporters

Encourage loyal donors to give during the campaign week to double their impact. Consider offering incentives like thank-you messages or donor recognition.

5. Leverage local networks

Tap into your local networks; businesses, influencers, and community groups can be fantastic allies in spreading the word. Keep them updated throughout the campaign so they can help amplify your message at key moments and encourage their own audiences to get involved.

6. Track and celebrate progress

Celebrating progress not only builds trust - it also inspires more giving. And, if you’re lucky enough to hit your fundraising target before the campaign ends, why not give another participating charity a shoutout? It’s a simple way to extend the impact and celebrate the wider network of causes making a difference.

Having supported several charities with their campaigns, I’ve seen how The Big Give consistently delivers real results, transforming how charities unlock new funding and grow their impact.

Why it matters

The Big Give isn’t just a fundraising tool - it’s a practical (and really helpful) way for charities to reach new supporters, grow their impact and connect with their communities. For local organisations in Sheffield, it’s a chance to raise vital funds, share their stories and be part of something bigger during the season of giving.

So if you're thinking about giving this December, The Big Give can help make your donation go even further.

Every pound given through the campaign could be doubled, helping local charities do even more for the communities they serve.
